Uncle Tom's Cabin is a typical Kiwi 'sleepout/bach' situated on a 5 acre plot on the edge of the town of Carterton, in the Wairarapa.
The SH2, which passes through the town is a main arterial route from Auckland in the north; (you may have stopped off at Lake Taupo or Rotarua, visited the beautiful eastern coastal regions of the Coromandel and Hawkes Bay already,) but now you need to pause and visit the many scenic reserves in the Carterton district before driving on to Wellington. Mount Holdsworth, Fensham and Waiohine Gorge are just a few worth experiencing but the Patuna Chasm is a definite must for the adventurous.
The area is also a hot-spot for events at all times of the year; agricultural shows, the Wairarapa balloon festival, the Golden Shears competiton and the Martinborough classic car festival to name but a few.
The Wairarapa is now becoming renown for the delicious wines produced in the area. Martinborough and Gladstone have a wine trail where you can taste the different delicious varieties before settling down at one of the restaurants to enjoy your favourite over a tasty lunch or dinner or to take on your journey onward. The quaint town of Martinborough has a full compliment of chic boutiques and restaurants and the surrounding landscape is breathtaking.
Don't forget to visit Stonehenge Aotearoa sitting on the Eastern hills with spectacular views across to Carterton on the plain and the majestic Tararuas in the west. The henge, built by the Astronomical Society replicates Britains Stonehenge with alignment to the summer/winter solstice and equinox.
Greytown also on the SH2, being one of the first settler towns, has been adopted as the new 'in-town' for smart Wellingtonians. An assortment of galleries and quaint shops sell everything you need, be it chic clothing or a memento of your trip of a life time. Don't miss the Cobblestones Museum in Greytown where you can appreciate the grit and determination of the early settlers in their attempts to make a life in this tough but idyllic new land.
Your journey now takes you on to Wellington for the ferry across the Cook Straits or flight to the South Island.

Message from the Owner

This is a typical Kiwi sleepout escape pad, suitable for 2 people.
Sited in the town of Carterton on the main arterial route to Wellington, (SH2,) Uncle Tom's cabin is on a 5 acre section on the edge of town - a perfect place to get some peaceful nights sleep and a chance to explore some of the scenic reserves just a short distance away. (Patuna Chasm is an absolute must for the adventurous.)
Lying on the plain between the Tararuas in the west and the Eastern hills; with unbelievable sunsets you'll find everything you need in this compact but self-contained little pad. A small kitchen and shower/wc complete the accommodation with bed linen and towels provided.
Martinborough, a short drive away, is the mecca for delicious food on offer at the wineries with tasting samples of the local grapes before buying - well why not? Greytown, the new 'in' town is on the road through to Wellington with lots of chic boutique shops for those momentoes. So much to see & do, it's a challenge!
